I thought that Mike might stumble after his swing coach, Joey, moved to Bend, Oregon but then along comes Stevie to give him a putting lesson and…

Mike’s lesson brought changes into view
With putting the object of review.
He replaced his old poke
With a new smoother stroke
And tied my ‘dot’ record twenty two.

Jeffery’s game is on fire from tee to…..the middle of the fairway. Anywhere near the green and the demons are set loose. We’ve a new phrase for when you’re around the green in two and walk off with a seven…”he sure Jeffery’d that hole!”.

Jeff’s tee ball we’ve started ignoring
Though straight down the middle they’re soaring.
Until he lays claim
To a better short game
They won’t do much good for his scoring.

One of our playing partners said he used to be called ‘twinkle toes’ with a soccer ball. Given his current ’stature’ I had trouble reconciling that…and it certainly didn’t carry over to his golf game. That said, he’s good company and knows his beer!

He claimed a nickname ‘twinkle toes’
From the soccer ball skill that he shows.
But with a golf ball
He’s not that at all,
His twinkle is sprinkled with woes.

We’ll be off on our annual Myrtle Beach golf extravaganza next week. Nothing but eating, sleeping and golfing with occasional forays into town to uncover entertainment (note to wives, it’s just Bingo).

It’s Myrtle time first week of June
Where we golf whether sun or monsoon.
With mornings sedate
After lunch we create
A golf ‘party’ round afternoon.

Finally we’re getting some good golfing weather! I still haven’t broken out my shorts but some others have. I’m now playing more golf than I’m watching. Tiger has definitely taken some air out of the PGA Tour but mostly it’s the Stanley Cup playoffs. There’s some great hockey being played now so check it out if you haven’t done so already.

One of my playing partners finally managed to face down his nemesis hole. A soul crunching, game wrenching, uber difficult shot over water on a…116 yard par 3! Then again, he plays with a Noodle.

Hole seven was always beyond
His shot-making skill to respond.
But this time his swing
Had just enough zing
That he managed to carry the pond.

Mike’s come up with a new and novel excuse for hitting bad shots…

His pitch shot did much to remove
The hope that his score would improve.
After hitting it thin
He said with a grin,
“I hit the ball on the wrong groove.”

Manny wins the award for student of the year! If everyone else would just listen…

When Manny came seeking advice
On a tee ball gone hooking left twice,
He asked Johnny “Why?”
Whose expert reply
Was “a later release will suffice.”

So Manny then heeded this sage
And re-teed to write a new page.
A high soaring draw
The envy of all
Showed this Johnny as wise beyond age.

Finally, here’s a new dirty trick in the fairway that I’d never heard before…

A tee in the fairways forbidden
But some, if integrities slidden,
Will try to disguise
Improving their lies.
Green Lifesaver tees will stay hidden.

Here’s the funniest story of the year! We were playing at Pacific Grove near Monterey Bay, CA and had all rented pull carts (those three-wheeled jobs that roll real easily). As my partner was waiting his turn in the fairway, he noticed his cart starting to roll downhill. No problem, he thought as he looked back to watch another player hit. It’ll roll a little ways then stop. As he turned back, he saw it still rolling, picking up speed and headed for the lake! He burst into a run (such as it was) and the chase was on. I’m howling with laughter as the cart continues to pull away with our friend straining mightily in what appears to be a losing effort. It took me three limericks to capture the whole story. Enjoy!

In the fairway he’d made a mistake
By failing to engage the brake.
His cart started rolling
As we were extolling,
“It’s headed straight into the lake!”

When finally he heard what we said
His eyes bulged with impending dread.
He started to run
Which heightened the fun,
‘Cause he’s slow and a bit over-fed.

As the cart started pulling away
We laughed at the comic display.
In the end it stopped short
As the rough did abort,
Our story from Monterey Bay.

Today’s post goes out to Jeffery, golf buddy extraordinaire, who celebrates his birthday today. He’s still south of fifty…but not by much, and he’s still single…but not by much, and his game is still improving…but not by much. Happy birthday and enjoy your limericks!

Jeffery’s birthday’s today so we’ll flatter
His golf game and try not to shatter,
His Senior Tour yearning
As soon he’ll be learning,
It’s his hairline and penis that matter.

The only one better at avoiding the altar is George Clooney…

Not yet fifty but he’s getting near
So he’s downshifted, maybe a gear.
Still driving that Porsche
And single of course,
But for Farah we’d think he was queer.

and his wrist action is all wrong but he just won’t listen….

In our foursome, he’s youngest of all
So why can’t he hit a long ball?
Although you may mock
We think it’s his cock,
He’s not getting length ’cause it’s small.

This weather is cutting into my game. Then again, maybe it’ll cool Mike off. I’m all for supporting my golf buddies to shoot good scores but not when they take my money…

A mean is an average that’s mean
‘Cause it’s cruel when it falls from extreme.
Mike’s hitting it well
But it’s time that will tell
If he’s really a golfing machine.

After getting beat a couple of times I needed an excuse and, of course, I found one…

I was getting some trouble from Mike
Whose swing was producing a strike
That made the ball fly,
While I struggled to try
And compensate for missing a spike.

Here’s a great quote from Don who makes his limerick debut ..”that shot was a Linda Ronstadt”…

He hit hard and the ball really flew
When it bounced and kept rolling he knew,
Upon reaching his ball
He’d out drove them all
And was heard whistling ‘Blue Bayou’.

Finally, I wish I had a camera last weekend as the combo sunrise, crescent moon was downright poetic…

We teed just before the sun rose
As a crescent moon hung in repose.
We guessed at the flight
With a golfer’s delight
And will follow where ever it goes.
